Balinese Wayang Wong masks are used in traditional theatricalizations of the Ramayana still extant in a few villages in Bali, including Mas, Tejakula, Kamasan and Batuan. The Ramayana came into Bali through Java, where a version was written in the Kawi language in the late 9th Century AD and has long been a popular subject in Balinese arts. Wayang Wong performances are now associated especially with the holidays of remembrance and renewal Guningan and Kuningan, celebrated every 210 days in the Balinese calendar. The form features a large cast of opposing monkey and demon armies: there would be over 50 masks in a full set.
